AI needs to work on its conversation game

AI language models struggle with natural conversation because they can't detect transition relevant places (TRPs) – the moments when one speaker hands over the floor to another. While humans pick up on these cues using both verbal and non-verbal signals, AI systems, primarily trained on written content, miss this nuance.

Research from Tufts University found that while AI can detect patterns in text, it struggles with TRPs in spoken dialogue. This is because it’s trained on text-based data, not conversational transcripts, and lacks the depth of understanding required for natural conversation.

What We Think

To improve AI's conversational skills, it might be necessary to fine-tune large language models with more spoken dialogue data. However, even with additional conversational training, AI may still struggle to fully grasp turn-taking in conversations. There may be a deeper issue where AI is predicting text based on patterns, rather than understanding the conversation's full context, which could be a barrier to truly natural interaction.

As AI models rely more on cloud-based datasets, securing this data is crucial. It’s important to assess the sensitivity of the data, which can be categorized into low, medium, or high-risk levels based on the potential harm if compromised. Proper data protection mechanisms like encryption, access control, anonymization, and tokenization are vital for securing sensitive data. Additionally, monitoring access and usage helps identify suspicious activity.

Google Labs has launched GenChess, an online game using the Gemini Imagen 3 AI to let players design their own custom chess pieces based on text prompts, such as sushi or pizza. Users can refine their creations and then play against an AI opponent. Google also introduced additional chess-related initiatives, including a coding challenge for AI chess engines and the upcoming Chess Gem game for Gemini, which allows users to play chess against a language model with casual banter, available to Gemini Advanced subscribers.

OpenAI has filed a trademark application for its new "reasoning" AI model, o1, with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) to protect its intellectual property. The company had also filed for a foreign trademark in Jamaica months before the model’s announcement. Unlike most AI models, o1 focuses on reasoning by fact-checking itself, allowing for more accurate and complex task performance. Although OpenAI has faced challenges in trademarking certain terms, like "GPT," it continues to assert its IP rights, including a legal battle over the use of the "OpenAI" name.

💡AI Tips and Best Practices
