The US Department of Defense has invested $2.4 million in Hive AI's deepfake detection technology to combat disinformation and cyber threats. Hive's models can identify AI-generated content in videos, images, and audio, offering significant advancements in security. Despite its strong performance, experts warn that the technology isn't foolproof and could be bypassed by sophisticated adversaries. While Hive's tools show promise, especially for defense applications, experts caution that they may not be fully resilient to advanced nation-state-level cyberattacks.

What We Think: Hive AI's deepfake detection is a critical step in countering disinformation, but its vulnerability to advanced attacks shows the constant challenge of staying ahead of evolving threats. While the DOD’s investment is promising, ongoing innovation and adaptation will be key to ensuring long-term effectiveness.

In winter 2025, UCLA will offer a literature class with AI-generated materials, including a textbook and assignments, using Kudu, an AI platform. The course, covering literature from the Middle Ages to the 17th century, will be the first in UCLA's humanities division to use Kudu. Professor Zrinka Stahuljak provided class materials to train the system, which will save time and ensure consistent delivery. Students can also ask Kudu questions based on the professor’s content.

Machine learning (ML) is ideal for predicting trends and automating decisions from large, complex datasets, like customer segmentation or fraud detection. It’s also useful for analyzing unstructured data, such as images and text. Traditional analytics, however, is better suited for understanding historical data, identifying trends, and testing hypotheses with smaller, simpler datasets. ML is a powerful tool for forecasting, but traditional methods excel in explaining clear relationships and working with straightforward data. Choose ML for complexity and prediction, and traditional analytics for insight into historical data and simple patterns.

OpenAI's new $200-a-month ChatGPT Pro plan, featuring the "o1 pro mode," promises improved reliability and comprehensiveness, particularly in science, math, and coding tasks. However, the initial reception has been lukewarm, with critics questioning whether the upgrade truly justifies the steep price. Users and experts alike are struggling to find concrete examples where o1 pro mode significantly outperforms the standard version, with failure cases in tasks like Sudoku and optical illusions. While the service does offer benefits like unlimited access and higher performance, its value proposition remains unclear, leaving many skeptical about whether it’s worth the cost, especially when cheaper alternatives might suffice.
